What does your patient bring to the session – and why have they brought it? What is the function of what they have brought, and why do they bring it now? Bion argues that every patient will try to seduce/placate/distance or recruit the therapist in some way – to ensure that the therapist takes up a role which allows a ‘being with’ for the patient, but without being ‘in danger’. As clinicians, we will be recruited into this enactment. How can we recognise it, and work with it therapeutically? We will use one or two extracts from the DVD “In Treatment” to explore this further, together with examples of your own.
