CPD Leader: Dr. Elspeth Schwenk

Dr Elspeth Schwenk is a counsellor and psychotherapist, supervisor and trainer based in Wiltshire.  She is a University External Examiner and consultant for counselling agencies, providing bespoke training, supervision and welfare support and conference engagements.  She has been associated with outdoor and adventure therapy for many years, both with the UK and internationally, and is now working with Wiltshire Dementia care delivering social and horticultural therapy.

There has been an increasing awareness and recognition of the therapeutic benefits of ‘being outside’, and a shift toward ‘taking therapy outside’.  We will discuss why, when and how we can take therapy outside, and look at some of the ‘outside options’ available to us (meditation, walking, adventure, horticulture, animal-assisted).  We will also explore the therapeutic relationship with nature and some of the issues attending to taking the work outside (confidentiality, boundaries, safety and ethical dilemmas) and reflect upon our own relationship with nature and being outside.

Note: This is an experiential workshop – weather permitting we will go outside!  Come prepared for a brief outdoor therapeutic encounter!
